I used gunk and oven cleaner, as did others, on mine and it worked great. Some have used a piano wire to poke through it to clean it out. Just do so carefully. If it's fully clogged, it will take time and patience. You might be able to check a junk yard for one that's not so clogged so you can clean it up easier and fast so you can get it inspected.

Good luck and keep us posted. I also tried a pressure washer that someone said they used. It helped some. Soaking seems to be the thing that needs to be done to soften up the hardened oil. I sprayed oven cleaner in it and covered the hole until it came out the other end, 4 or 5 times.
Let it soak for 30 minutes or so then used the pressure washer. Make sure you wear some sort of eye protection. I didn't have carb cleaner but brake cleaner helped also.

The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine in order to decrease cylinder temperatures and NOx emissions. The gas circulated by the EGR system can be considerably hot however, especially in vehicles equipped with diesel engines. For this reason many diesel engines are equipped with EGR coolers to lower the temperature of the exhaust gases before they enter the engine.
An EGR cooler is a metal device that employs thin passages and fins to cool the exhaust gases. They function in much the same way as a radiator functions, by using the cool air passing through the fins to cool the exhaust gases as they flow through the cooler. This can lead to performance issues, and even problems with passing emissions standards for states where they are required.
Usually a bad or failing EGR cooler will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential problem that should be serviced. One of the first symptoms of a potential problem with the EGR cooler is engine overheating. If the EGR cooler has any issues that restrict the flow of exhaust gases through the cooler it can cause the engine to overheat. Over time, carbon can build up on the inside of the EGR cooler and restrict flow through the cooler. This can cause the unit to overheat, at which point it will not be able to cool the exhaust gases, and the engine will overheat as a result.
Engine overheating can lead to knock or ping from the engineand even serious damage, if the issue is left unattended. Another issue of a problem with the EGR cooler is exhaust leaks. If the EGR cooler gaskets fail, or the cooler gets damaged for any reason, it can cause an exhaust leak to develop.
An exhaust leak may be heard as an audible hissing or tapping sound coming from the front of the vehicle. This will reduce the efficiency of the EGR system, and negatively affect engine performance. If the computer detects a problem with the EGR system, such as insufficient flow or exhaust, it will set off the Check Engine Light to alert the driver of the issue.
A Check Engine Light can also be set off by a wide variety of other issues, so having the computer scanned for trouble codes is highly recommended.
EGR coolers are not found on all vehicles, but for the vehicles that are equipped with them they are critical to the performance and driveability of the vehicle.

Whether mechanical or electronic, EGR valves open and close to control the gas flow. If left open, the excess vacuum will cause the engine to act like it wants to stall, idling roughly or surging. If the valve stays closed, detonation could occur in the combustion chambers; this knocking or pinging will lower mileage and the lifespan of the engine. How to clean EGR cooler? No light or compressed air will pass through. I have soaked the EGR cooler overnight and also ran hot water through it but it is still badly clogged.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to properly and successfully clean this part without ruining it? I believe this is partly due to the fact that Sullivan County, NY has very high sulfur content in the diesel fuel. What are the EGR coolers made of? They are designed to get hot enough to burn off carbonaceous crud but not melt the steel. I think they get too hot for aluminum though.
Caution: this WILL anneal the material. If it is some kind of special heat-treated steel it will revert back to a mild steel. My guess is it is a mild steel anyway NIST applet. What tire psi? Do I need nitrogen in my tires? I would first like to see if anyone knows of a way to clean the EGR cooler before I look into the modification. Don't clean it. I figure if it gets clogged who cares. Doesn't that just mean that less exhaust can get through and into the intake?
If the air flow is restricted from the exhaust manifold through the egr cooler the engine would not be breathing right. I will update when i find out. I used a section of straightened coat hanger, some cleaner and a power washer on my EGR cooler. A little tedious and very messy, but it came out fine.
Before was almost totally clogged. It went in the trash. Next time send it to me.

I'll pay shipping. There wont be a next time. Im looking into the stealth egr and cooler delete kit from dieselgeek. Not looking foward for that job or price again. You have no idea how lucky you are that you did not pierce the tubes.
I see that ALL the time.The unexplained loss of coolant from your degas overflow bottle or cooling system. This can easily be explained when you have a bad EGR cooler - the EGR cooler is simply leaking the coolant back into the exhaust system, not outside of the engine.
Most people make an expensive mistake of ignoring this warning sign. They assume that since they can not find or see the leak, it must not actually be a leak. The longer they ignore it, the more coolant that leaks out of the engine and quickly creates warning sign 2.
All that white smoke coming out of the tailpipe is actually steam. As the coolant is dumped into the exhaust system, it quickly vaporizes and turns from liquid to steam and comes out of the exhaust. That "puking" of coolant out of your degas bottle is actually not a sign, necessarily, of a bad EGR cooler. On a Ford 6.

Mine was so clogged that after a couple of days with the oxi clean soak wasn't getting it done, carb cleaner wasn't getting it done what I did was take a metal coat hanger and cut out about 8 inches and stuck it in a electric drill and shoved it down each hole to clean it out.
The sharp cut end made it through pretty easy and you could rinse after and look for light. Its a painful process but you should see light when you look through it or you just wasted your time. Next time I will start with the coat hanger cause the soaking doesn't cut it for me.
Pdaddy likes this. I used a Cable TV coax wire, found that just about the right thickness. Yeah you've got to open up channels if it's utterly clogged. I did start with brake cleaner.
Pdaddy Junior Member. Finally got unblocked with the hanger wire and drill and water runs through it at a high rate. A wire piece broke off inside, but was able to easily push it out with more hanger wire.
I don't know if this would have worked from the beginning as I surely have softened the deposits up with carb cleaner and oxi, but after my experience with the helpful advice received I would suggest just a couple of soaks and using a hanger wire or other wire with a drill if the egr cooler is all clogged up!
